Ibn Taymiyah said, “Whoever contemplates [tadabbur] upon the Qur’ān [with the condition] of seeking guidance from it, [then] the path of truth will be made clear.” [Aqeedah al-Waasityah]
- Ibn Qayyim said, "In short, there is nothing more beneficial for the heart than reading the Quran and with contemplation and reflection. The Quran encompasses all levels of the travellers, the conditions of the workers, and the stations of those possessing know. It is the Quran that generates love, desire, fear, hope, repentance, reliance, pleasure, entrustment, gratitude, patience, and the rest of the different states that are life to the heart and perfection of it. Likewise, it repels all the rebuked characteristics and actions that cause the corruption and ruin of the heart. If people were to possess a realization of what recitation of Quran with contemplation contains, they would devote themselves to it at the expense of anything else". [Ref: Miftaah Daar as Saadah p.204]
-
Abdullah ibn Masood, the Companion, said, “When you intend to acquire knowledge, deeply study the Qur’ān for in it lies the [principles] of knowledge of the ancients and future generations.”
-
Hasan ibn Ali said, “The people before you considered the Qur’ān to be correspondence from their Lord, so they would ponder it by night and perform it by day.” [Ref: Nawawi, Tibyan fi Adab Hamalatul Qur’ān]
Explanatory Note
The law God has laid down for human life is part of His law for the universe. His revealed book, the Qur’ān, explains the truth on which His universal law is based. The justice required of those who are in authority, i.e. vicegerents, and those who judge between people are part of the total truth. People’s lives cannot be properly established unless this part is in harmony with the rest of the parts. This means that deviation from the divine law, the truth in discharging the responsibilities of man’s vicegerency on earth and from fairness when judging disputes is in effect a deviation from the universal law that sustains the universe. It is, therefore, a very serious and grave matter, one that leads to a collision with the immense universal forces. Anyone heading for such a collision will end in ruin. No wrongdoing tyrant can withstand such crushing forces. This must always be remembered and reflected upon by people endowed with insight.
3. Surah Overview
- The Prophet Muhammad [saw] said,
“...A group of people do not gather in a house amongst the Houses of Allah [i.e. Masjid] reciting the Book of Allah and studying it between themselves – except that tranquillity descends upon them, they are enveloped by mercy and surrounded by the angels – and Allah mentions them with those with Him [i.e. the higher angels]." [Muslim no. 9/1023, Abu Dawud no. 1455 - صحيح [Sahih] -
The Prophet Muhammad [saw] said,
من علمَ آيةً من كتابِ اللهِ عز وجل ، كانَ لهُ ثوابُها ما تليتْ
“Whoever teaches one verse of the Book of Allah Almighty, he will be rewarded [every time] it is recited.” [Silsilah Ahadeeth as-Saheehah no. 1335 - صحيح [Sahih] -
Hasan al-Basri [one of the Tabi’een] said, “There was not revealed a [single] Ayat from the Qur’ān except that it has a Dhahir [an apparent] and Batin [inner] and every letter has a value [measure] – and for every value is an ending.” [Baghawi, Sharh us Sunnah no. 1/214]
